a diferença é que o was é para i/he/she/it e o were é para you/we/you/they.
para o negativo, o que muda é a terminação, ficando : wasn't e weren't, que são contraídas do was not e were not.

i am thin now, but when i was child, i was really fat.
i am thin now. when i was child, i wasn't fat.
